Reports: Traditional Communities and fisheries conflicts

Thursday, October 13th, 2022

11 AM — 1 PM (BRT)

Open to the public | No registration needed

The search for socio-environmental justice and the health of the oceans in coastal and marine regions stems from injustices and inequalities suffered by coastal populations, in particular by fisherwomen and artisanal fishermen. Pollution, transformation of biomes, limitation or loss of access to productive territories, whether due to conflict with other more influential political and economic agents or the collapse of fishing stocks, are recurring patterns in these cases of injustice, causing populations belonging to vulnerable social groups, are pressured to change their way of life, to live with garbage, contaminated water and soil, or are expelled from their territories.

The table “Reports: Traditional Communities and fisheries conflicts” aims to present reports of situations of socio-environmental conflicts related to artisanal fishing experienced by fisherwomen and fishermen from different regions of Brazil, highlighting the main conflicts they experience in their regions, how the confrontation of these has been happening and what are the possible solutions.

Representatives of institutions aligned with the theme and that have been working on the elaboration of materials that portray the reality of conflicts will also participate in the speeches.

There will be a moment to receive questions from the spectators at the table, to discuss the information presented during the guests’ exhibition.
