Ocean Literacy is defined as the “understanding of the ocean’s influence on our lives and our actions on the ocean”, where we correspond to individuals and institutions, whether public, private or civil society.
Ocean Literacy is made with all different sectors of society. So, let’s dialogue with each sector, considering its characteristics and specificities.
With the mission of promoting transformative science-based solutions for sustainable development, the UN has proclaimed the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development – Ocean Decade – which runs from 2021 to 2030 – to drive the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
The Ocean Decade connects people and institutions around the world for sustainability, involving all sectors of society permeate the Ocean Decade, leaving no one behind.
For the first time in the southern hemisphere, UNESCO, the Maré de Ciência Program – Unifesp, and the City of Santos organize in October 2022 the world event Ocean Literacy Dialogues, to celebrate, raise awareness, engage, debate, experience and communicate Ocean Literacy with diverse audiences.
Together we will build the Generation Ocean. The Ocean Literacy Dialogues is a unique and pioneering opportunity to integrate different sectors of society to debate about Ocean Literacy. It will be a dynamic week, full of diverse events that will integrate science, arts, culture, innovation, inclusion, gastronomy, water sports, communication, and citizenship with Ocean Literacy.
We offer spaces for discussions based on the best scientific knowledge available and for construction of solutions for the ocean we want – in addition to awareness and engagement experiences. All sectors of society will be able to participate in sessions and events, and for the dissemination of knowledge and appreciation of partnerships, we will have journalistic coverage and dissemination by Grupo Tribuna, an affiliate of Rede Globo in Baixada Santista, and social networks of partners, connecting the local to the global.
In June 2022 at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, UNESCO will promote the first edition of the Ocean Literacy Dialogues. The event will take place in different countries, starting with Brazil. Thus, this is an innovative and ambitious proposal for a first major event in the southern hemisphere that will align marine science and global agendas, which will integrate local, regional and global events.
Ocean Literacy Dialogues is an event in which the advance of scientific, technological and innovation knowledge in the different themes of sustainability and marine science can be debated in an integrated way with traditional knowledge, public and private governance and that contemplates the social impact of science.
Considering the diversity and peculiarity of these multiple sectors of society, Ocean Literacy Dialogues is composed of a series of sessions for integrating academic scientific knowledge by themes and with the collaboration of specific audiences: communicators, formal education educators and non-formal education, port sector, traditional communities, public managers, companies and society in general.
